The Violin
The violin's soaring, expressive tone—bright yet warm—has made it one of the world's most beloved instruments. From concert halls to street corners, its voice connects people across cultures, stirring emotion and uniting listeners in shared feeling.
What it is
The modern violin emerged in 16th-century Cremona, Italy. Andrea Amati crafted the earliest known examples around 1550; his grandson Nicolo Amati refined the elegant form and powerful tone. Antonio Stradivari then perfected the design in the late 1600s-early 1700s, creating instruments still prized for unmatched projection and beauty.
From court ensembles to today's orchestras, solo stages, and popular music, the violin's essentially unchanged shape has kept it a vital, expressive voice across centuries and cultures.
Did you know?
Stradivari also made guitars, mandolins, and even a harp—yet only about 650 of his roughly 1,100 instruments are known to survive.
