The Double Bass
The double bass delivers a deep, resonant, warm tone that anchors harmony with rich low frequencies. Widely popular in classical orchestras, jazz, and folk, it connects people through its grounding pulse and emotional depth, creating a shared foundation that feels both powerful and intimate.
What it is
The double bass emerged in the 16th century from large bass viols (violones), not as a simple “bigger cello.” While the cello developed as the bass of the violin family, the double bass mixed viol traits (sloping shoulders, often flat back) with violin-style features. It evolved through varied sizes, string counts, and tunings.
By the Classical and Romantic eras it standardized into the modern four-string instrument tuned in fourths, securing its place as the orchestra's foundation and later thriving in jazz and beyond.
Did you know?
It is the only orchestral string instrument still commonly played with two completely different bow holds—the overhand “French” and underhand “German”—a living reminder of its dual viol and violin heritage.
