The Viola

The viola’s warm, mellow, and richly textured tone sits between violin and cello, offering a deeply human, introspective voice. Though less famous than its siblings, it forges intimate emotional connections, drawing players and listeners into its soulful, velvety embrace across chamber music and orchestras.

The Viola

What it is

The viola emerged in northern Italy around 1500-1550 as part of the new viola da braccio (arm-held) family, evolving alongside the violin from earlier bowed instruments rather than as a simple enlarged violin. Early makers such as Andrea Amati and Gasparo da Salò refined its form; larger “tenor” models later shrank for easier playability, yielding today's standardized alto instrument with its warm, mellow voice.

Did you know?

The words “violin” and “violoncello” both derive from “viola”—the family was essentially built around the viola itself.
