The Trumpet
In the symphony orchestra, the trumpet's brilliant, heroic sound soars above the ensemble with radiant power. A cornerstone of classical repertoire, it captivates audiences worldwide, forging deep emotional connections through triumphant fanfares and lyrical solos that inspire awe and unity.
What it is
The trumpet evolved from ancient animal horns and early metal signal instruments used for military calls and ceremonies over 3,000 years ago. Egypt's Tutankhamun-era trumpets (silver and bronze/copper, c. 1323 BCE) are the oldest surviving examples; they were not originally designed as modern brass instruments but as straight lip-vibrated tubes of various metals. Folded natural trumpets appeared around 1400, limited to the harmonic series. Valves, invented c. 1814-15 by Stölzel and Blühmel, enabled full chromatic playing and created today's orchestral trumpet.
Did you know?
Tutankhamun's trumpets were played live on BBC radio in 1939—after more than 3,000 years of silence—to an estimated 150 million listeners.
