The Clarinet
The clarinet's warm, expressive tone ranges from silky soft to bright and piercing. Popular in classical, jazz, and folk music worldwide, it connects people through its emotional depth, bridging cultures and inspiring performers and listeners with its versatile, human-like voice.
What it is
The clarinet evolved around 1690-1700 when Nuremberg instrument maker Johann Christoph Denner improved the limited-range single-reed chalumeau by adding a register key. This allowed it to overblow at the twelfth, creating a brilliant upper register and transforming it into a true clarinet.
Designed from the start as a woodwind with a cylindrical bore and single reed (unlike the edge-blown flute, which overblows at the octave), it gradually gained keys. By the 1840s the Boehm system—adapted from flute mechanisms—produced the agile modern instrument now standard in orchestras, jazz, and bands worldwide.

Early clarinets were played with the reed facing up against the upper lip; the modern reed-down position only became common after 1800.

Students Pursuing a Diploma
For diploma candidates, you must have already completed Grade 8 practical exam, be it of ABRSM, Trinity College of London (TCL), or London College of Music (LCM).
Course Structure
Each lesson blends practical playing with essential theory. Students spend time at the instrument developing technique and musicality while also learning notation, rhythm, and musical concepts—both elements working together to build well-rounded, confident player.
** For Diploma in Performance, it will be solely on practical. Grade 6-8 students can opt out of the subject of Theory as well.
